How to Choose a One-Step Conversion Factor by Unit Cancellation

A one-step conversion factor must be oriented so the starting unit cancels and the target unit remains. Magnitude is only a secondary check because denominator units can reverse the usual pattern.

Every conversion factor is a ratio equal to one

An equality such as 1 km=1000 m1\ \mathrm{km}=1000\ \mathrm{m} creates two reciprocal factors:

1000 m1 kmand1 km1000 m.\frac{1000\ \mathrm{m}}{1\ \mathrm{km}} \qquad\text{and}\qquad \frac{1\ \mathrm{km}}{1000\ \mathrm{m}}.

Both ratios equal one, so multiplying by either one preserves the physical quantity. Only one orientation, however, will produce the requested unit.

Let cancellation choose the direction

Choose the factor by units before working with the numbers. Put the starting unit opposite its position in the measured quantity so it cancels, and put the target unit where it will remain.

For example, to convert 2.5 km2.5\ \mathrm{km} to meters, use

2.5 km×1000 m1 km=2500 m.2.5\ \mathrm{km}\times\frac{1000\ \mathrm{m}}{1\ \mathrm{km}} =2500\ \mathrm{m}.

The kilometer units cancel. Reversing the factor would leave km2/m\mathrm{km^2/m} rather than meters, immediately exposing the mistake.

Use magnitude as a secondary check

For a simple quantity such as length, converting to a smaller unit increases the numerical magnitude, while converting to a larger unit decreases it. This shortcut does not transfer directly to compound or rate units: when the converted unit is in the denominator, the pattern can reverse. Use magnitude only as a secondary check. Unit cancellation is the decisive check because it shows that the result has the requested dimension and unit.
