How Combustion Data Reveal Ring Strain

Ring strain is an energetic penalty, so it can be investigated using combustion data rather than estimated from a flat polygon alone.

Ring strain is an energetic penalty, so it can be investigated using combustion data rather than estimated from a flat polygon alone.

Normalize before comparing

For an unsubstituted saturated carbon ring, each carbon contributes a CH₂ unit. Larger molecules release more total heat simply because more material burns. Divide the magnitude of the molar combustion enthalpy by the number of CH₂ units before comparing rings.

Subtract a reference

Use a consistent strain-free acyclic reference per CH₂ unit. The excess heat released per unit, multiplied by ring size, estimates the ring’s total strain energy. Keep physical states and thermochemical conventions consistent. With signed negative combustion enthalpies, a more negative value means a larger heat-release magnitude.

Interpret the difference

The excess includes angle distortion, eclipsing interactions, and unfavorable nonbonded contacts. A combustion measurement reports their combined energetic effect; it does not separately measure each contribution. Three-dimensional conformations explain why polygon angles alone fail to predict the result.
