Derive the DBE Formula and Check Molecular Structures

Count missing hydrogen pairs, adjust for nitrogen and halogens, and use DBE as a structural constraint rather than a unique structure assignment.

The degree of unsaturation, or double-bond equivalent (DBE), measures how many hydrogen pairs a neutral formula lacks relative to an acyclic saturated reference. It is a structural bookkeeping tool, not a measure of how readily a compound reacts.

Build the reference formula

An acyclic saturated hydrocarbon contains 2C+22C+2 hydrogens. Each ordinary trivalent nitrogen adds one hydrogen to the saturated reference. Each halogen replaces one hydrogen. Divalent oxygen does not change the hydrogen capacity. This gives

Hmax=2C+2+NX,DBE=HmaxH2.H_{\max}=2C+2+N-X,\qquad \mathrm{DBE}=\frac{H_{\max}-H}{2}.

Closing a ring or introducing a double bond removes one hydrogen pair. Introducing a triple bond removes two. Therefore

DBE=rings+double bonds+2(triple bonds).\mathrm{DBE}=\text{rings}+\text{double bonds}+2(\text{triple bonds}).

The count includes heteroatom double bonds, such as a carbonyl, even though oxygen is absent from the formula for DBE.

Work a new formula

For C4H7NO\mathrm{C_4H_7NO}, the saturated hydrogen reference is 2(4)+2+1=112(4)+2+1=11. The formula has four fewer hydrogens, so DBE is (117)/2=2(11-7)/2=2.

One compatible connectivity is HOCH2CH2CH2CN\mathrm{HO{-}CH_2{-}CH_2{-}CH_2{-}C\equiv N}. It contains four carbons, seven hydrogens, one nitrogen and one oxygen. Its nitrile triple bond accounts for both DBE units. This demonstrates compatibility; it does not prove that an unknown sample has this structure.

Check a proposed structure

First count the formula's atoms. Then count rings and multiple bonds independently from the proposed connectivity. Both routes should give the same DBE. A mismatch flags a missing bond, an incorrect hydrogen count or an inappropriate formula assumption.

For example, C5H10O\mathrm{C_5H_{10}O} has DBE 1. Pentanal can use that unit as a carbonyl; cyclopentanol can use it as a ring. The same DBE permits different structures and functional groups. Additional evidence is needed to choose between them.

Use this expression for ordinary neutral closed-shell formulas with the stated valences. A negative or half-integer result is a reason to recheck charge, radical character, valence and transcription rather than force a ring count. DBE alone does not establish a continuous cyclic π system or aromaticity.
