Understand the analysis task first

What Is Data Analysis—and How Should You Approach It?

Data analysis is the process of examining information to answer a defined question. It includes understanding the data, checking quality, selecting appropriate methods, inspecting outputs and interpreting what the evidence supports. Different questions require different approaches; a description, an inference, a qualitative interpretation and a prediction are not interchangeable.

Begin with what one observation represents and what each variable means. Record missing values and exclusions, choose a method that fits the design and verify the results before drawing conclusions. Verla’s discussion of using analysis software alongside academic explanation and revision clarifies that division of work. AI can help structure questions and explanations, but it cannot make an unsuitable dataset answer a question it was not designed to address.

Make the analysis traceable

Six Ways to Work Through Data Analysis with AI Support

Plan and explain the work while keeping computation, evidence and interpretation open to review.

🎯

Define the Question and Unit of Analysis

State what you want to know and what one row or text segment represents. Identify the population or context you can actually describe rather than generalizing beyond the data.

🧹

Plan Checks for Data Quality

Review types, units, duplicate rules, missing codes and exclusions. Do not automatically delete unusual values or fill blanks with zero; document decisions and their consequences.

🧩

Match Data Analysis Methods to the Design

Distinguish descriptive summaries, comparisons, qualitative interpretation and prediction. For inferential work, check assumptions and the study design before selecting a test or claiming a result.

▣

Plan Data Analysis and Visualization Together

Choose a visual that answers the question and preserves labels, units and denominators. Avoid truncated or inconsistent scales that exaggerate differences; a chart should clarify rather than certify a claim.

🔎

Interpret Results with Their Limits

Explain effect size, uncertainty, context and alternative explanations where relevant. A pattern is not proof of causation, and an exploratory finding is not automatically a confirmed hypothesis.

🧾

Build a Reproducible Report

Record the data version, cleaning rules, method, code or calculation and checked output. Use AI tools for data analysis explanations critically; preserve an audit trail instead of presenting unexecuted suggestions as findings.

Different questions, different evidence

Use Analysis Support Where the Reasoning Needs Review

Start with what the data can support rather than choosing a tool or method first.

🧹

Inspect an Unfamiliar Dataset

Column types, units and missing codes are unclear. Define the variables and quality checks before interpreting a summary or chart.

📋

Report a Questionnaire Transparently

Percentages change when unanswered questions are excluded. State the denominator, response coding and sampling limitations alongside the result.

⚖️

Explain a Group Difference

One group average is higher. Separate the descriptive difference from any inferential question and check the design before claiming significance or cause.

💬

Review Open-Text Feedback

A few comments suggest a theme. Keep excerpts and coding decisions traceable, consider competing interpretations and avoid treating a label as an established prevalence finding.

🏢

Interpret Sales or Marketing Measures

The report mixes contacts, responses, revenue and profit. Define each metric, period and denominator before comparing channels or drawing a business conclusion.

🔮

Plan a Prediction Assignment

You have a target but no validated model. Define a baseline, appropriate split and leakage checks before discussing performance or future predictions.

Frequently asked questions

AI Data Analysis FAQ

Answers about methods, software, interpretation and verification.

How do I analyse data when I do not know where to start?

Define the question, observation unit, variables and source first. Inspect missing values, types and obvious quality issues, then choose a method appropriate to the design. Compute in the required environment, check the result and report limitations. Do not select a test only because a tool offers it or start with a chart before understanding what it measures.

What types of data analysis should I distinguish?

Descriptive work summarizes what is observed; exploratory work investigates patterns and assumptions; inferential work addresses a defined question with uncertainty under an appropriate design. Qualitative analysis interprets text or other material using an explicit approach. Predictive analysis evaluates how well a model estimates outcomes for unseen cases; these purposes can overlap but are not interchangeable.

How is exploratory data analysis different from proving a hypothesis?

Exploration helps inspect distributions, missingness, unusual values and relationships. It can generate questions, but an observed pattern alone is not a confirmed hypothesis or causal explanation. Keep exploratory choices transparent and distinguish later confirmatory work. NIST’s EDA overview describes this inspection-oriented approach.

What should I check before statistical data analysis?

Check the question, design, measurement scales, dependence structure, missing data and assumptions relevant to the intended method. Choose uncertainty measures and comparisons that fit the task, and avoid interpreting a p-value without effect size and context. This preview does not run inferential tests or select a universally appropriate method from a file.

Can AI help with survey and qualitative data analysis?

It can help draft a transparent plan or review an explanation, but denominators, coding decisions and interpretations need verification. State survey exclusions and sampling limits; keep qualitative codes linked to the actual context and selected approach. A generated theme is not automatically validated, and a convenience sample does not become representative because an AI summarized it.

How should I choose AI data analysis tools or AI analytics tools?

Match the tool to the required computation, data permissions, reproducibility and output. Check whether it actually executes code, exposes methods and handles the needed file types. A data analysis tool or data analyzer that writes a convincing explanation is not necessarily validated data analysis software. Verify the actual workflow rather than inferring features from the tool category.

Can Verla automatically run analysis or train a predictive model here?

No live file processing, code execution, statistical testing, model training or dashboard connection is implemented in this page. Verla publicly lists Data Analysis as an assignment type, but an authenticated statistical runtime and predictive workflow were not tested or established. Use the required analysis environment for computation and validate outputs before asking for explanation or revision.

How should sales data analysis and marketing data analysis be reported?

Define the metric, period, population and denominator, then separate observed values from targets or forecasts. Response rate, conversion, revenue and profit are different quantities. A channel comparison does not establish causal effectiveness without an appropriate design. Label assumptions and preserve costs, uncertainty and limitations relevant to the conclusion.

Make the Method Clear.
Keep the Conclusion Checkable.

Bring your question, variable definitions and verified evidence. Work through a transparent analysis plan and an explanation whose limits you can defend.
